System Restore Fails

K

Karlea

When I was having problems with my computer I tried to do a system restore.
It tells me that the drave was excluded from monitoring [not possible and
not true] or was turned off or removed [also a lie]. In the System Restore
tab in My Computer, it says it is being monitored. At the end of the process
it tells me that 'your computer cannot be resoted to: [whatever date I
choose.]

I thought that I was onto something when I thought of my Norton SystemWorks,
that maybe GoBack was conflicting with it...and that maybe I could get my
system back to good order by using that. However, it hadn't been installed
because for some reason, that doesn't automatically happen when you install
the program. So, I was up a creek.

Does anyone know what could be up with System Restore that it would not
restore?

Thanks for your anticipated thoughtful reply.

Hi Karlea,

When I was having problems with my computer I tried to do a system
restore. It tells me that the drave was excluded from monitoring [not
possible and not true] or was turned off or removed [also a lie]. In
the System Restore tab in My Computer, it says it is being monitored.
At the end of the process it tells me that 'your computer cannot be
resoted to: [whatever date I choose.]

The majority of the time this is caused by a corrupt restore point.
Turning System Restore off then on again will purges all existing
restore points, and creates one new one.

Try running System Restore from Safe Mode.
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to
start your computer in Safe Mode.

Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account
that has administrator credentials.
In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box
then press Enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

There are also other possibilities that can cause this to happen. The
following pages have some troubleshooting steps to take.

I thought that I was onto something when I thought of my Norton
SystemWorks, that maybe GoBack was conflicting with it...and that
maybe I could get my system back to good order by using that. However,
it hadn't been installed because for some reason, that doesn't
automatically happen when you install the program. So, I was up a
creek.

I would suggest uninstalling NSW and GoBack while troubleshooting System
Restore. These two applications tend to cause more problems than they
solve.

It's very easy to make sweeping statements but much more difficult to
justify them. How do you justify your comments with regards to GoBack?
It would be my observation from the number of posts concerning problems with
System Restore, that it is System Restore that creates
"more problems than 'it solves'". I have seldom seen posts from those with
GoBack problems. My own experience with GoBack is it is totally reliable,
that would not be my experience with System Restore, as you know.

As far as I am concerned, ALL Norton products need be uninstalled before
any troubleshooting begins. Period.
