System Restore errors

If I attempt to access the System Restore function from System Tools, I get
the error message: "System Restore is unable to protect your computer.
Please restart your computer and then run System Restore again." Needless
to say this doesn't help. If I try to access System Restore through My
Computer, Properties I get the error message: "Run dll as an application
has encountered a problem and needs to close etc. etc." If I try to send
the error message to Microsoft I get the error message: "Dr. Watson has
encountered an problem etc. etc." I have switched System Restore off then
on again using registry and rebooting in between. Accessing My Computer
properties confirms System Restore is off as there is no SR Tag. However
looking in System Volume Information, Restore, still shows 84 restore
points. I know that switching SR off deletes RS points but do they still
remain on the drive? I have run SFC and Windows XP Repair without any
changes to my problem. If I use CMD and enter
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe I get the Run dll as an
application error.
Can anybody suggest a way to reinstall the system restore function without a
complete reinstall of Windows.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi

If you turn System Restore off, then all the existing checkpoints are
deleted. Try re-installing SR:

Open Windows Explorer and go to the windows\inf folder. Find the sr.inf
file, right click on it and select Install.

Thank you for the very fast response. Reinstalling the system restore
function cleared the problem and all the previous 84 restore points as seen
in the system volume information folder have now disappeared as they should
have done.
Many thanks again.

You're welcome. When you get the chance, make sure that you can use a
system checkpoint - that will show if System Restore is working properly.

Have done. Created a new restore point OK and then restored back to the
system restore point created when I reinstalled the function.
Many thanks again.
