I have been having problems getting my system restore to turn back on. I shut
it off to clean out my system volume because of an adware. I had a program in
my machine to block worms etc. When I rebooted after I cleaned system volume
the program (secret maker) asked if I wanted sr blocked. Not realizing what
SR was I hit yes... Well now I get this error when I try to turn system
restore on.... System restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable
one ore more drives
could not start system restore service on local computer. I get this error
when I go into the system to turn it on through admistrator..error2 the
system cannot find file specified
Now I tried everything to undo this. unistalled secret maker.. tried to
reinstall system restore with files from Hard drive..then even sp2
disk..tried even reinstalling windows..but alot of files would not copy..
....I am at wits end and ready to take my hammer out...lol
I am running Xp home
Thanks in advance for any help..

smile then everyone will think your up to something:)

I did that but it won't copy the files.. either from pointing it or using the
cd...it will start ..then will not copy srclient.dll or anything after that.
Thats why I am getting so frustrated.. whatever I try is not working
but thanks for trying to help.

Hi,

I suspect this Secret Marker stopped the System Restore Service. Open
Secret Marker and set the System Restore Service to start.

How do I Start or Stop a specific service?
Simply click the corresponding button from the service you want to Start
or Stop.
The red or green frame around the button will change between these two
colors to indicate if the service is started or not. The little i below
the button will inform you about the service provided.

I tried stopping the service(secret maker) that didn't work..Then I
uninstalled it. Still that didn't work... I also wrote to tec support on
secret maker and they told me it couldn't be that.. see this is why the
hammer is really starting to look like a goos idea..lol
thanks for the help though.

You don't want to stop the System Restore Service, you want to Start it!

Go to Start - Run and type the following command then press enter.

cmd /k net Start

This will show all the Services that have been started. Is the System
Restore Service running?

all that comes up when I type that in is the box that comes up is the dos box
named C:\WINNT\system32|CMD.exe ... and this is in it.. c:\Documents and
settings\Owner
doesn't show anything running

Good. Lets start the System Restore Service manually.

Go to Start - Run and paste the following command, then press Enter.

Services.msc

Under the Name column locate System Restore Service and double click on
it.
On "Startup type:" select Automatic from the dropdown list.
Then just below click on Start. Then OK to save setting.

Reboot the system and select cmd /k net Start from the run box and
check to see if the service is running.
Let me know what you find.

Still not running.. When I checked it was on automatic.. so I disabled it..
rebooted..then set it for automatic again ...rebooted...then checked and it
is still not running.. I know when I try to turn it on this is the error I
get..
system restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one ore more
drives
could not start system restore service on local computer. Then when I go
and try to start it in services, this is the error that comes up. .... error2
the system cannot find file specified.

Yahooo.. it worked!!! Thanks so much. I wish I could buy you a drink..... I
do have a question though...when I ran the set up.. I had about 10 or 15
files that did not copy. I just canceled them and went on... everything seems
to be running fine though. Do you think I have to worry?

That's great!!!

Not knowing what files where not copied, I cant say. Did this happen
during the reinstall of SR?

No I didn't see any with sr involved. It was when windows reinstalled. ...
One or 2 said system might not work correctly... but the rest didn't say
that. I should have wrote them down....I guess I won't worry about it unless
something doesnt' run right..
Thank you again!!!!
smile then everyone will think your up to something:)

i say that you don't have to reinstall your computer for an adware you can
just download adaware from download.com and install it and update it and run
it it will soulve your problem with that adaware.
