System Restore Error

I have this error when opening system restore - System Restore Application
has encountered an error and needs to close...

The restore windows opens and stays white (no icons) then I get the error
message. Windows XP system.

This is the error:
c\DOCUME`1\COMPAQ`1.YOU\LOCALS`1\Temp\cf80_appcompat.txt

Any help or suggestions. I have tried everything else. Ran disk error.
Clean-up disk space. Have 201.70 GB on C and 386MB on D. Even updated the XP
service pack 3.

The cf80_appcompat.txt file is created by Dr.Watson when System Restore
crashes and is uploaded to Microsoft. It's not what's causing the error.
