Whenever I run System Restore, it seems to be working,
but then I get a message saying it couldn't restore to
whatever point I chose. I've tried about 7-8 different
dates and keep getting the same message. The computer
restarts and everything seems fine, but the system won't
be restored. I'm trying to fix a printer problem, but
even my System Restore doesn't work. What to do??

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.
You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works, half the time.

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

System Restore In MS's own words .......lol

"The System Restore feature of Windows XP enables you to
restore a PC, in the event of a problem, to a previous
state without losing personal data files. System Restore
actively monitors system file changes to record or store
previous versions before the changes occurred. With System
Restore, you never have to think about taking system
snapshots as it automatically creates easily identifiable
restore points, which allow you to restore the system to a
previous point in time."

"you never have to think about taking system snapshots"
Oh, really.

For Home: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
Value name: DisableSR. Value of 1 turns it off, 0 or deleting it turns it
on.

Or run this regfile:

Restore/Enable System Restore (Line 278)

Hi Willit, the Eru NT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) tool is very cool. It
gives the user options to keep as many registry / security backups as the
user thinks he/she needs. Very nice tool. I save each backup folder as
"Erd_curr_date".

As to address to the original post, he/she can restore the printer driver,
either by re-installing the driver from the printer's cd-rom, or, do it in
Device Mananger.

1. Control panel / System (assuming he/she logs in with Admin
privileges)
2. click Hardware tab, click Device Manager button
3. scroll to Ports - printer LPT1 (assuming he/she has printer via parallel
port)
or to USB (universal serial bus controllers)
4. right-click, choose Properties
5. click Driver tab
6. click "Roll back driver"
