System-restore does not work...

I have several restore-points on my computer. But I get the following
messages after trying to restore to existing restore-points: "Restoring was
not finished", ""The computer could not be restored to that date", "No
changes have been made", "Start system restore again if you would choose
another restore-point". Trying this the whole sequence is repeated. Is there
anybody outthere who knows how I can restore my system under these
circumstances??

The restore points are probably corrupted. You wouldn't be able to use any
of them. The best thing to do will be to turn off system restore, restart
your PC then turn it back on again to get rig of the corruption.
I don't think you have any other option.

I did as you proposed following the nice discription on
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/body_srfail.html (many thanks to him). But at
first I tried to make an own restorepoint, leaving all my earlier not working
points intact. I thought that the new one would´nt work either, since I had
read that restorepoints are dependent on each other. But the new one did!
(Any explanation?) So now I have purged all earlier points and am nearly
happy again. Only nearly, because all rubbish which I hoped to get rid of
remains on my harddisk.

What rubbish are you referring to. If you have removed all the restore
points then that only removes files in "System Volume Information" if you do
a disk cleanup then temp files etc will be removed if you select that
option.

Normally this is the case. On possibility for this is malware/virus
infection interfering with the restore process.
Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may
have been created recently that may help.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

I am not shure that I understand you right but I give you here the event-ID
for the new point after purging all earlier points, which is 110 and one from
a point made before, which is 111. I give you only the ID:s since i persume
that you are not so familar with the swedish language.

The reason why I tried to restore the system was that I hoped to get rid of
rests in the registry from applicationinstallations which were not taken by
the program-take-away-option in the controlpanel.

By the way: I tried to look in the folder System Volume Informtion, but
failed. I suppose that this can depend on that it ist writingprotected. I
tried to unprotect it, but the protection remains. Have you any explanation?

This is OK but, it should done before any additional applications are
installed. Any applications installed after the restore point being
restored to will not function, in most cases.

A good scenario is to create a restore point, install the new
application, evaluate it, then decide weather you want to keep it. To
uninstall the application first remove it via add/remove programs in
control panel then restore to the restore point created before the
application was installed.

Yes, here are the instructions.
