System restore does not restore

E

em21

My System Restore only restores to the last 2 days, June 05-06 that is. Any
date before that, even though highlited, it doesn't go through. The system
goes through the whole procedure and at the end I get the message:
"Restoration Incomplete". Your computer cannot be restored to...the point I
had chosen. I tried with about 10 different points and got the same thing.

I use Ccleaner, and Registry Mechanic just about every day except for the
last 2 days. could that have something to do with the problem?

I went to Windows Help and Support and that was a waste of time. I'd
appreciate any suggestions. I use Windows XP/SP3.

Thanks,
Edith

What Norton application is installed? What Norton application used to be
installed?

The damage may have been caused by your registry cleaners. Most of them are
considered useless (at best) or destructive (at worst).

cCleaner does do a great job but I would not recommend using the
Registry option.

I don't have Norton, I use AVG free. I've used this AV for over a year and
never had any problems with System Restore until now.

Are you running AVG Pro or Free? Is it v7.5, v8.0 or v8.5?

No doubt about it, especially given the fact that the only available Restore
Points were created after you'd last run CCleaner and/or Registry Mechanic.

Have you purchased Registry Mechanic? Do you have backups of the changes
made by Registry Mechanic?

Do you ever use the "Registry Integrity" component of CCleaner? Do you
maintain backs of the changes being made here?

If you think your Registry needs to be "cleaned" or "repaired" and you need
another whack with a cluestick, read http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099
and draw your own conclusions.

I'm sorry, it's AVG free 8.5.
Thanks,

Thanks,

Why do you think you need to do a System Restore in the first place?
(this is not your exact problem, but I am curious).

You said you "never had any problems with System Restore until now" -
how often do you use it and why?

I have never used system restore to fix any problem on my system
(lucky me), so I am trying to understand the fascination with using it
when finding and fixing the problem sounds like a more sensible
option. SR seems to often to be the first thing people try. It is
the last thing I would try.

(my "System Restore is not a time machine" mantra...)

By the way, I went through the troubleshootings tips I found in the link
Gerry send and System Restore seems to be working OK. I went up to the point
where you do a System Restore Test, and it restored to the Test Point OK. But
I still can't restore to any point before June 05, 2009 which is what I want
to do because I trying to fix another problem in my computer.

Unless you have back-ups of the changes made by your Registry cleaning,
you're pretty much SOL.

Do those Restore Points even exist?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space do you have on it?

Pa Bear, I don' use the Registry cleaner in Ccleaner. When I use Registry
Mechanic, (Bought) I do back up everything, except the Temp Files/Shortcuts.
Those I usually delete.

As long as I have the rest of the files backed up, shouldn't System Restore
be able to use them? You know of anything I could do to make that happen?
I've used RM for years, and this is the first time I have this problem.

Thanks

Do you have an external drive?

What drives is System Restore monitoring?

Hope this helps.

Addendum:

Others have mentioned that altering the registry by using Registry
Mechanic may be responsible for your issue. While I agree that these
programs provide little to no value (99.9% of the time leftover registry
entries cause no noticeable performance issues) and should generally not
be used (because somtimes they *do* cause damage), I doubt your small
number of useable Restore Points is a function of having used RM's
registry cleaning function (but perhaps another one of its functions
could have caused it; see below). If you don't have enough free space on
your hard drive, that could cause your situation. If you set the value
for Disk Space Usage too low (see below *), that could cause your
situation. If you turned off System Restore and turned it back on, that
would surely delete all but the most recent Restore Point. So would
certain disk cleaning activities, for example:

Double-click My Computer and right-click C: and select Properties. In
the General tab, click on Disk Cleanup. If you click on the More Options
tab and click on "Clean up..." that would delete all but the most recent
Restore Point. I would imagine either Ccleaner or Registry Mechanic
might have this feature, too.

What was the other problem you had with your PC?

To set the value for Disk Space Usage:

Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click on the System
Restore tab. Then select C: and click on the Settings button. There is
a slider. What is your value?

It would be my last choice too. But it was a suggestion from a Gateway tech
who is helping me with another problem I have with "safe to remove hardware"
When I found out that it wouldn't restore to a previous restore point, like
it is supposed to do, I naturally wanted to know what was causing the
problem, so I can fix it.

Yes, I have an external hard drive, but it is not connected when I am trying
to resore. The drives been monitored are C and D only.
