Backward - because there are no points to go back to.
Forward - erm, why you reckon?

Maybe i didn't say enough. system restore has always worked, for more than a
year now. all of a sudden i'm getting the message "a suspicious script has
been detected--c:\windows\system32\restore\rstryi.exe". what could have
caused me to lost previous restore points?

This means that there are no restore points available for the previous
month(s).

Hi Jackie,

If the system is more than a month old there could be a problem with
the creation of automatic restore points. Here are some
troubleshooting steps to follow if this is the case.
