System restore affecting Add / Remove programs

I am encountering a series of problems where Add / Remove programs is not
working correctly, returning an error of the for “…cannot find
….uninstall.logâ€. I believe this to have come about by using the System
Restore application when trying to set up my new PC. This seems to have led
to duplications of some folders appearing in the directory listing. It is
the applications that have duplicate folders that I cannot remove using Add /
Remove programs. I have successfully removed the unwanted McAfee virus
protection software that came pre-installed on my PC by a manual un-install
with assistance from their technical support. This involved some Registry
editing. I guess that I will need to do similar for the other programs that
are in a similar state (currently QuickTime).

Can anyone point me in the direction of some general instructions for
manually un-installing programs that cannot be removed using Add / Remove
programs ? Is this a common fault ? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
John.

Why have you used System Restore when trying to set up your new PC?

What specific programmes are you still intending to remove?

Whose technical support helped you remove McAfee?

What specific duplicate folders do you have?

How were you editing the registry? Unless you are an experienced user
this can be very unwise!

What Windows XP CDs do you have? What make and model is your
computer.

You could be approaching the situation on your computer where you
have made too many wrong decisions making a new installation of the
system unavoidable.

Hope this helps.

Do the duplicates have a 2 appended to the folder. If so they are folders
that were there when system restore restored your computer. It keeps them as
there might be files inside that you need. The add remove programs will
point to the folder without the number 2. You dont need to uninstall them
you can delete them if you dont need anything in them and if you dont need
to roll back the system restore point. Best to leave them until you are sure
you dont need them as once deleted you cant get them back. If you do try and
delete them manually what error messages if any do you get.

Have a look here for more info about system restore.
