system resource exceeded with linked Excel

I have a client using WinXP/Office 2003. He has an Access database that is
linked to 4 Excel tables. Everything worked fine until about 2 days ago. Now
when he tries to open one of the linked Excel tables or run a query using
those tables, he gets the error: "system resource exceeded." His database is
only about 2 mb. We also opened a new database and tried to link to one of
the Excel files and got the same error. Could this be some type of ODBC issue?

I doubt if this is it, but how many records are in the tables?
 
The Excel files were saved in Excel 95 format. Changed the format to current
Excel version and now everything works fine!!!
