System Registry Absolutely Butchered

My windows system registry has gone nuts on me. Originally, it simply had a
new default... it would "Search" folders instead of "Opening" them when
double-clicked. I have been all over the 'web, from my computer's
manufacturer to tech support to chatrooms right here. Nobody seems able to
help me. Instead, they'd much rather sell me support contracts and
anti-spyware...

Now, my system registry no longer recognizes folders at all.

I need either a new, factory-spec system registry, or a snippet from it that
I can install to tell Windows exactly what a folder is and what it's supposed
to do.

You did look hard enough, many site will help you with this problem and even
searching this newsgroup would also reveal many solutions.

I think you're talking about "My Computer"!!
Search, dbl click, open.

What do you mean by "new Default?

MAybe should reask question about problem w/ my computer

Maybe I wasn't quite clear enough... my system registry no longer has ENTRIES
for folders and/or file folders. They don't exist. And the command referenced
by your link there has removed even the useless "Open With..." command from
the right-click menus... now, double-clicking a folder defaults to the "Cut"
action, as in cut-and-paste.

Despite your best intentions, I still maintain that I need replacement
entries in my registry.

Doug Knox's folder association script may fix it.

Download the "File Assosiciation fix" and "Directory Extension Fix" from
Doug's Site.

Directory Association installed, and re-created my old "Search" problem.
Folder Association REFUSES to install at all, as mentioned in my reply when
Bud suggested it, below.

Aha... Didn't have sufficient permission to modify the "Folder" entry. Well,
I do now, and the script has been installed. Thank you all for working with
me, all is well once more.

Go to your registry and check the permission on this key

HKCR\Folder

Right click on Folder and select permissions.
Click the Advance button.
Click on the Owner tab and select Administrators and check "Replace Owner on
subcontainers and objects". Click Apply.
Click on the Permissions tab. Uncheck "Inherit permissions ....". Click
Apply.
Remove all permissions. Click Apply.
Check "Inherit Permissions...." Click Apply
Check "Replace Permissions ...." Click Apply

Exit the Registry.

Apply the Folder Fix Association file.

Good to hear you got that fixed.
