bad registry question?

Hello, i am having some issues here, hope someone may be able to help..

i recently uninstalled a video editing program, when i did i lost most of my
desktop items. i then tried to do a system restore from a backup point.
everything came back, except more than half of my folders are now empty.
some contained programs, videos, and various applications. i have done a
system search for the missing files, and some i have found now relocated to
the depths of beyond my know how, some others seeming to be in peices.

the only other change i made was deleting a tool i downloaded for a support
form(ironically from the manufacturer of the video software) called
"getsysinfo" used to find specific info on my puter.

it seems to me this might be a registry problem. is there anything i can do
to restore my system to where it was before without doing it manually?

Thank you for any ideas, Nick
