In System Properties on my XP Pro laptop, on the first screen, it displays
the CPU type and RAM total.

Mine reads:

Intel Pentium M Processor 1400MHz
587 MHz
1.00 GB of RAM

What is this second MHz reading? The CPU is 1.4GHz Pentium-M, so what does
587MHz refer to?

Thanks

I'm guessing OK ? It's probably a speedstep CPU and
that's the fallback speed (power savings, heat reduction,
etc.) Someone PLEASE correct me.

And I loved the way someone in this group signed off a few
days ago:

The first is the rated speed of the processor, the second is the speed at
which the processor is actually running.

Why would my processor be running at 587MHz when I am running on mains?

On a laptop you probably have one of the CPUs that can fall back to a
slower speed to save battery power, and that is what is being indicated.
For straight forward tasks this should be fast enough: for things like
Movies or some games you would need all the speed - the makers should
have provided a means of control
