System Mechanic optimized defrag problem

Hello,

Anyone else use System Mechanic?

I used the optimized HD defrag option in System Mechanic 4. My HD is a
Western Digital 40G HD (8mb cache). It contains about 10G of data.

I started the optimized defrag last Friday afternoon - but on Monday
morning -
yes, 4 nights later - it still had not finished. SM does not give an
estimate on when it will complete. And yes, I have been checking the
computer to make sure it did not get stuck or something. And no it is not
connected to internet during the procedure.

Cheers!

It could be your screensaver, a program that is trying to connect to the
Internet to check for an update, or ?????.
I would try it in Safe Mode.
Were you having a HDD problem?
Did you run ScanDisk(or a similar program) first?
Every once in awhile it is a good idea to delete the Applog file.
With modern cpu s, amt of memory and HDD speed, it really doesn't benefit
much to optimize while defragging.
Hell, even a defrag doesn't seem to make a lot of difference unless it is
really fragmented a lot, and even then, not a very noticable difference.
AFAIK.

Try the following. If it does not resolve your problem, please post back
here with the results.

Download this free utility program developed by Koldbear and associates.
Follow the instructions to the letter.

Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance program
there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk Defragmenter. It's easy
to setup and use, and it can deal with problems like "drive's contents have
changed: restarting...". Get it and read about all the options it has that
you can use.

It is not unusual to see Defrag restart a number of times.
It is , however, unusual to see ScanDisk restart. This is why I suggest
starting it at bedtime and letting it run overnight. Please, email "The
ScanDefrag Team" if you have any problems using our program. Your problem,
will be properly attended to. And we assure you, that every attempt will be
made to resolved it.

To see how to email us, read the ScanDefrag "Readme" file, using ScanDefrag
under the "Help" menu.

OR, TRY IN SAFE MODE:

To Scandisk and Defrag in Safe Mode; Reboot, hold down the Ctrl key until
the black screen comes up. You will see a list of choices, select Safe Mode,
3. After the Scan/Defrag is complete, reboot and let the system load
normally to Windows.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, actually my system is fine as can be. I usually use the standard
Windows defrag. Its just that System Mechanic claimed that its "OPTIMIZED
DEFRAG" program would speed up my HD a little more.

I heard from other users that they have the same problem with OD.

The system is also rather new - the HD got reformated and XP installed only
about 3 weeks ago.

Some of the utilities in the latest version of System Mechanic are brand
new and some are OEM'd. I'd stay away from 3rd party utilities, unless
you can get an excellent recommendation from a source you trust. That
includes System Mechanic.
