system low on virtual memory

Camroc

Hello,

I keep getting this message when using Win 2000. I don't receive the message
on startup.

"Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that Windows runs properly,
increase the size of your virtual memory paging file".

How do I do this and what size should it be?

I have 128MB RAM and one HDD.

Thanks,

Camroc.

Hi Camroc,

Usually 2.5 time your RAM is a start.
128 meg of RAM on W2K is a bit light.
Anyways, here's how to do that...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=257758

That works, if your pagefile.sys has been deleted by the system and replaced with
temppf.sys. A hint to finding these are making System files and Hidden files no hidden. If
you don't know where they are , Control Panel > Folder Options > View[tab] > check show
Hidden files and folders and uncheck the next two. To find the files just do a search for
pagefile.sys and temppf.sys. and you will see. If the Temp file is there, the first KB file
is your baby, and if pagefile.sys is still there, use this one.

Your Virtual Memory file settings are located in the Control Panel under System >
Advanced[tab] > (the top button). Set both to zero there like it tells you to do, and follow
their instruction from there.

If it doesn't work, I can give you a complicated way to rebuild your Virtual Memory, but you
will probably be okay with the first two.

There are two things I would look at:
1. Download AdAware (http://lavasoftusa.com) and run a full scan with it to
remove any bots that may be clogging your system.
2. How big is your HD? I doubt that it's the problem, but we have to cover
all the bases.

Generally, this problem comes from having too many programs open, such as
bots or other spyware. Adaware should remove them.
