System Low in Resources!

I have Windows 2000 SR-1 on my system. Yesterday when I
went to open a saved file I get the following message
window: "The system is dangerously low in resources! Would
you like to terminate the following applicatioin? Doc.1 -
Microsoft Word [Not Responding]."
I can choose "yes", "no" or "cancel." No matter which
button I select, the timer icon appears & the computer is
locked up. I must then turn off my main power & re-start
the computer.
I have deleted files & programs hoping to add disk space
(if that is the problem) but this did not help.
My system is a Gateway ME. Hard drive capacity 18.6 GB.
Free space is 7.80 GB.
Need advice ASAP.
(I posted this question on the Newsgroup for Word 2000 &
it was suggested that I try another newsgroup as they were
unable to help me.)

Hi Carol,

This can happen because the normal.dot template is corrupted. Rename it to
Normal.Old and then re-start Word.
