system log is not current

The Windows log-system most recent date is 9/27/08. However, the Application
& security logs are current. What do I need to do to make the system log
current?
 
Did it reach its file size limit and the setting is set to Do not
overwrite...?
 
It was set to overwrite, but the limit was reached. I cleared the log and it
started to record current events. I don't understand as I'm thinking the
overwrite setting should have prevent this from occurring?
