system lockup

I am having an issue with my laptop locking up. Windows starts without a
hitch, but occasionally when I start an application, the screen will go black
and I cannot restart the computer without removing the battery and starting
over. There is no regularity to when it happens or what application starts
the problem. Any suggestions on where to start?
 
Either the battery is going bad or needs a better charge. Try using the
AC adapter and see if it happens then.
 
The battery is fully charged, and has the ac adapter connected. It also does
not matter if the adapter is connected or on battery power. When it locks
up, all the lights remain on. The screen goes blank and quits responding to
keystrokes, including the power button.
