System Information has disappeared!

Hey everyon

Just a quick question. I've been tweaking my computer (by disabing unnecessary services and startup items) and I seem to have created (maybe?) a problem. System Information, which originally opened up as a windows box titled System Information, now instead opens up as 'Help and Support Center.' Although it would seem that msinfo32.exe and all the attached files are still present, alongside the necessary registry entries, the original System Information box is no where to be seen! Does anyone have any ideas what I should do (besides kick myself for messing around with the computer)? Any help would be much appreciated

Thank

Dylan

Hi Dylan,

The unchecked items will still be listed in Msconfig/Startup. Could you
post which you have listed as being disabled/unchecked? And also, which
Services you altered? Was it also via Msconfig/Services or Admin
Tools/Services?

Hey Kelly (Great website by the way!

Thanks for the reply. It's truly appreciated

The list of services I disabled are as follows (note that I used services in administrative tools

Alerter – Changed from manual to disabled
Background Intelligent Transfer Service – Manual to disabled
Clipbook – Manual to disabled
Computer Browser – Automatic to disabled
Distributed Link Tracking Client – Automatic to manual
Help and Support – Automatic to disabled
Indexing System – Automatic to disabled
Net Logon – Manual to disabled
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing – Manual to disabled
Network DDE – Manual to disabled
Network DDE DSDM – Manual to disabled
Performance Logs and Alerts – Manual to disabled
Portable Media Serial Number – Automatic to disabled
QoS RSVP – Manual to disabled
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager – Manual to disabled
Secondary Logon – Automatic to disabled
Server – Automatic to disabled
Smart Card – Automatic to disable
Smart Card Helper – Automatic to disabled
SSDP Discovery Service – Manual to disabled
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper – Automatic to disabled
Universal Plug and Play Device Host – Manual to disabled
Upload Manager – Automatic to disabled
WebClient – Automatic to manual
Wireless Zero Configuration – Automatic to disabled
Windows Time – Automatic to disabled

With regard to the programs disabled via msconfig, there is a slight problem (hence why I'm kicking myself). I recall disabling DirectCd.exe, dadapp.exe, dlg.exe, wkfud.exe, WkDetect.exe. Dragdiag.exe, nwiz.exe (I used pacs-portal amongst other sites). Following this, once I was happy that my system was operating without these programs, I proceeded to remove the entries from msconfig all togother via the registry (apart from dadapp.exe). Therefore I cannot be 100% that I haven't forgotten any programs I disabled. However, I cannot recall removing anything related to msinfo32.exe or system infomation

As I said in my initial posting, I haven't changed anything in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\MSINFO32.EXE. Nor can I recall making any other registry changes in relation to system information, so i'm a bit confused

Anyhow, I hope that the information I've provided will help you solve the mystery

Thank

Dylan

One more thing before I forget. I ran "msinfo32 /categories +all -loadedmodules" in Start/Run and a similar box to System Information (including similar details that are found in the original System Information if I remember correctly) came up, with the difference that it is now encapsulated inside the normal help and support center box. However, even then, running System Information from Accessories/System Tools still brings up just Help and Support Center starting screen. Don't know if that helps

Dylan

Thank you so much. Will spend some time looking this over. :o) What a
great plus for me!
