System Identifer For "My Computer"?

R

Richard in Va.

Would anyone know the system Identifier for "My Computer"?

I found a website that showed a registry tweak that would allow me to customize the "Save
As" dialog box to include (in the left column) custom folder shortcuts. I always save
files to a partition other than C:\.

http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/registry/29/

As soon as I began the registry edit, adding the "Placesbar" key...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ComDlg32\Placesbar

I lost all the system default shortcuts that included "My Computer". So I'm having to
add them back.

The page list identifiers for many of the system folders which are helpful. However the
number for "My Computer" shows up as my Start Menu.

Anyone know the correct identifier?

Thanks for your help!

I don't know what to suggest other than perhaps searching Ramesh's site to
see if you can find anything there (or hope that he replies to this thread)

Use Decimal value "17" for "My Computer".

Or even easier, use TweakUI
Edit the Places bar locations in Open/Save As boxes:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/placesbar.htm

List of CSIDL values are here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...llcc/platform/shell/reference/enums/csidl.asp

CSIDL_DESKTOP (0x0000)
The virtual folder representing the Windows desktop, the root of the
namespace.

CSIDL_DRIVES (0x0011)
The virtual folder representing My Computer, containing everything on the
local computer: storage devices, printers, and Control Panel. The folder may
also contain mapped network drives.

Thank-you Trevor and Ramesh,

I'll try these tonight when I'm at my home PC.

I'll post back the results...

PS: Is there a chance that the Open/Save Dialog box (window) can be made
larger? I realize (have read) that you can only have 5 "Places", I actually
have 6 in my registry, the 6th simply not showing up. But the main window,
right side, might be a little more useful if it were bigger.

Ramesh,

Decimal value of "17" worked fine, thanks for your help...!

I notice you mention CSIDL_DESKTOP (0x0000) for the virtual folder Desktop.

I used the decimal value of "0" for the Desktop and it seams to work okay. How would I
apply (0x0000) to the places Registry key in the event I later want to use one of the many
listed in the MS website you provided.

Thanks again, I've been wanting to fix this for some time now. Having a shortcut to my
download folder right there sure is handy!

Best regards,

Richard In Va.

Thank-you again Ramesh,

I really don't edit the registry very often, only when there's something
really bugging me. Therefore I don't fully understand the relationship
between decimal values as apposed to dword: values and such.

I should do a Google search on "dword:+explained" or something.

At work, I use AutoCAD mechanical design software. It has it's own
"Open/Save" or "Save As" dialog box that will allow you to drag-and-drop a
folder listed on the right side over to the left column turning it into a
Places shortcut. Really nice... It will also allow you to resize the entire
window to fill the screen and will remember the new size/position. Now
that's user friendly!

If AutoCAD can do this, there has to be a way to do it for the XP
"Open/Save" Dialog. At least in my opinion.

I've asked this question some time ago with little reply, so maybe it's
really not that easy to do.

Anyway... Thank-you for your time and the good help!

Best regards,

Richard In Va.
