hi there!

i've got a problem noone seems to know an answer for... :(

i cannot play wmv-encoded video-files on my system. if i try to, the player
opens, shows the first frame of the video (but ONLY the first one - no
animation...) and plays the sound normally.
after this point, i cannot do ANYTHING with my system.
- closing the player causes the system to freeze immediately
- trying to do anything else with the system (eg opening the startmenu)
causes the system to "prentend" to be busy for about 10 seconds, then
freezing completely
- if i do not do anything, the system freezes after approx. 20 seconds.

by "system freeze" i mean that i cannot move the mouse, the keyboard is
dead, and waiting several minutes is NOT a solution :(

this problem is reproducable. it appears every time i try to play a video
file.

this is what i tried so far:

- downloaded all the latest drivers and product updates for windows
(windowsupdate), updated the drivers and codecs
- uninstalled unneeded or unknown codecs (in fact i dont have a codec pack o
so installed. the only manually installed codec is divx6. there were no
other codecs installed in the past)
- tried several other players. all players have the same problem.
- performed a system-rollback to wmp9, then trying without success, then
reinstalling wmp10 - no success :(
- tried to play the wmv-files on another system -> no problems at all

best of all:
yesterday evening i played one wmv-file with wmp10 without any problems.
after that i shutted the system down. now after restarting the system this
morning, the same file is unplayable on my system :(
this problem appies to ALL wmv-files. this ist NOT a DRM-problem!

someone knows a solution? a hint? an idea where the problem might originate
from?
thanx in advance!

btw: my system:
amd 2600+
nforce2
512mb ram
radeon 9800pro
sb audigy2
windows xp sp2 with all updates
all drivers are up-to-date

Is it just wmv files?
WHere are these coming from?
Have you tried reindexing the files using windows media file editor.
Have you ever been able to play these files without this problem?
Have you removed the divx codec? I had serious trouble with my system after
installing it.
