System Freezes during Windows install

I am installing an new WD 120GB ATA HDD in a no name computer with a newly
purchased a copy of XP Home.

The original drive was also a WD 120GB ATA also. The jumpers are set the
same. (master) I also tried Cable select.

The installation starts normally and then freezes at various places during
the installation process. It has frozen during Format, During the Welcome
to Setup, Copying Files, etc. Most of the time it seems to get to: "Welcome
to Setup" and when you try to select the Option (setup, repair or quit), the
KB is frozen. The only way to get out of it is to turn of the computer.

I have two memory boards (1gb and 512 mb) and have tried using only one to
eliminate a possible bad memory board.

Since the installation locks up at various places, it's safe to assume
that you have a hardware problem. To find out what is causing the issue,
you'll need to do some hardware testing. Even though your hard drive is
new, it can be bad right out of the box. Start your troubleshooting by
testing it, and then the RAM. Here are general hardware troubleshooting
steps which describe how to do that:

I installed the drive about 6 months ago and it had been working fine. I
will run the HW tests. Thanks for the great link.

I just paid $90 for the CD--it is right out of the box. It has gotten as
far as copying all files from the CD and freezing during the install
process.

I will try some cd and memory diagnostics first.

Thanks, Norm

Hi Norm,

If RAM and HD test OK, you might try installing XP with a minimal amount of
peripherals--just the monitor, mouse, and keyboard. If the install goes OK,
add these back one at a time, letting Windows detect them. That may sort
things out for you.
