On windows xp, I have tried everything to stop explorer.exe to not freeze on shutdown. Installed and ran adaware, spybot, computer is updated, scanned for viruses..nothing..changed computers...and seems as though the problem is in the user profile. Anybody know the answer to this??

I am haveing the same problem. Pull the cable out from the NIC (or dissable it) and see if your problem goes away. When I do that on mine it cures it. as soon as plug it in it starts accting up again. I'm still looking for an answer as to why it does it.

I reinstalled Internet explorer..using http://dougknox.com/ it is temporarily fixed..but i'm sure it will come back soon..if anybody has any kind of info..please tell! Try it out geek...and let me know if it fixes your end

so many possible reasons...in the search box at the top of the page, type in
computer freezes, o
computer freezes at shutdown,o
computer won't shut down,o
computer hangs at shutdown,o
Without specific information it is hard to say...typically, the reasons for the pc not shutting down are not virus/spyware/malware related.
Here is just one example of why a computer won't shutdown
