I know I have windows problems and used the Sytem file checker. However,
Windows XP Media Centre is imbedded in my computer (pre-installed by Hewlett
Packard on new computer). The file checker admits I have problems but wants
me to insert the Windows CD, which I, of course do not have. I went to
regedit and the file source path is C:\windows\ which is where my windows
are. However, if I were to restore my computer - the hard drive would be
"E". How can I get the file checker to look on my computer instead of
wanting a disc.

Do you have a folder on your C Drive called "i386", "c:\i386"? If so, point
to that folder.

The following web site explains what you would like to do.

Scannow sfc
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Before I try the site you referred me to (which I have perused and it's
somewhat complex)....I do have a C:\1386 folder but when I click on it, it
appears to be empty.

A couple of questions:

Is there a i386 folder located in c:\windows. "c:\windows\i386"?

What is the size of the folder contents for c:\i386? Right-click in "i386"
and select properties. Write down "Size".

If you change the "sourcepath" value in the registry to "c:\" without the
quotes and then run "sfc /scannow". What happens?

I do have a c:\windows\I386 file (with a capital i) and it is 476 MB. When I
change the source path to C:\ - still wants the windows cd

Renee,

You should change the sourcepath back to "c:\windows" since this is how your
computer was before we changed the value.

Take a look at HP support page.

If your computer has Media Center 2005, a message may appear stating "Insert
Your Windows XP Profession CD2 Now". Click Cancel to continue. This message
may appear several times and does not affect the repair of standard files
that came with your PC.

I do have Windows XP Media Centre 2005 and I went through the file checker
and hit cancel each time it asked for the disk. Unfortunately this did not
solve my problems. Still have missing help files in graphics programs. I
either get nothing when I hit the Help file in a program or...and this is the
entire error message that I get in 2 of them:

winhlp32.exe entry point not found...procedure entry point MAPSLFix could
not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

Hewlett Packard wants me to restore my computer again. I bought it in
August and this would be the 2nd time I have had to do that. Cannot
understand why these problems are occuring as all my programs are Windows XP
compatable and worked perfectly in my older computer (also Windows XP). Will
I have to live without any help files? It takes me days to restore my
computer. I appreciate your help.

Renee,

We are going to try and replace some files manually. First do you have a
folder name "c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386"?

If you do, could you copy:

winhlp32.cnt
winhlp32.exe
winhlp.hlp

to "c:\windows\system32" folder.

If you do not have the "c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386" folder then copy
the files for "c:\windows\i386" to the "c:\windows\system32" folder.

If the files are named:

winhlp32.cn_
winhlp32.ex_
winhlp.hl_

then please post back where these files are located before copying any
files, "c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386" or "c:\windows\i386"?

Do not have a folder windows\servicepackfiles\1386.

These are the files that I have in c:\windows\1386:

winhelp - notice that is help, not hlp
winhelp.HL
and
winhlp32 - notice that is hlp
winhlp32.CN
winhlp32.HL

Could not find winhlp32.ex

Have not copied anything yet. Thanks again

OK, try this Renee,

Type the following 5 commands in the Command Prompt:

expand "%windir%\i386\winhlp32.exe" "%windir%\system32"
expand "%windir%\i386\winhlp.exe" "%windir%\system32"
expand "%windir%\i386\winhlp32.cn_" "%windir%\system32"
expand "%windir%\i386\winhlp32.hl_" "%windir%\system32"
expand "%windir%\i386\winhlp.hl_" "%windir%\system32"

**Ensure the underscore ( _ ) is after 3 of the 5 filenames.**

Do not know where I am supposed to type these into (command prompt?). Then
what do I do after I type them wherever you explain to me?

Must close off for this evening, but will work on this again tomorrow.
Thanks for not giving up!

Renee,

Open your start menu and click on RUN an then type:

cmd.exe

This is the Command Prompt, you can also start the Command Prompt by START >
All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Once you have run the commands, close the Command Prompt then try the Help
in your graphics program.

Tried all five - each one said can't open input file:

c:\windows\i386\winhlp32.exp (or cn or hl)

Oh, dear!

Hi Renee,

I would like to try something, making a Windows XP Media CD. I am going to
make a tutorial web page for you on how to create this CD. I have to go out
for a few hours and it will take some time to make the web page. When the
page is done, I will post back here.

Or you can email me at:

wcrawford AT mvps DOT org

Once the CD is created we will try to run the SFC command again. Do you have
any CD burning software installed? If so, what is the name of the CD burning
software?

I have Roxio's Easy Media Creator 8 installed. I burn CD's frequently, so
have all the necessary - CD-R - CD-RW and DVD-R and DVD-RW. However, the
Windows XP is imbedded on my computer - put there by Hewlett Packard on a
separate hard drive. Don't know if the Windows XP portion is actually
accessible. I could restore the computer, but have done that once before,
since we bought this brand new computer in August and I don't want to do that
again - way too time consuming. Much appreciated.
