System crashes, can't reboot easy ServicePack2

I have updated ServicePack2 and ever since my computer crashes on me.
I can boot up and as soon as I start any program -
WORD, Excel, internet explorer, anything - my system crashes and all I get
is a black screen
Does not react to a soft boot or hard boot. I have to completely turn off
my pc and rely on Lady Luck to have it run for 10 minutes without crashing
--- any suggestions as to what I can do please !!!
