system crash

running winxp pro with sp1. installed sp2 a few days ago and it locked
up moving files, quick launch taskbar was hidden and several other
problems. uninstalled it and later had system crash when booting. get
error message "winlogon.exe - entry point not found" the procedure
entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link
library Shlwapi.dll. this was followed by "user interface
failure"..the logonuser interface dll msgina.dll failed to load. i have
gone to recovery console and renamed winlogon.exe to old along with
msgina.dll, shell32.dll and shlwapi.dll and replaced them from i386 off
of the cd but still no joy. i have 2 other hard drives that serve as
mirror images and just did a ghost of c: last week so know i can restore
if have to but would like to solve the problem and learn by it. i also
tried replacing the 5 hives from a rp snapshot from system volume
information. i can work on the c: drive by booting into one of my back
up drives. any thoughts? thanks,
obxeye

You receive an error message when you try to install Windows XP updates from the Windows Update Web site:

I am having the exact same problem as obxeye however i began receiving the error message after I attempted to do a system restore. I can't logon, nor does anything happen though when I insert the XP CD or when I try to use the Windows Setup disks. I have tried the recovery but nothing works and I don't understand what it is that you said you can do to temporarily fix yours. I also have another computer with Windows XP on it. Just don't know what to do. Help, I am definitely not an advanced user but learn quickly, I think.
