System Bogged Down

XP Pro running on Inspirion 700M. Utilities seem to run fine (control panel
etc), but after the first application is launched the hard drive stays active
(light on constatnly) and the system slows down dramatically. Disk diagnostic
runs fine.
Any Ideas?
 
Virus, spyware? Check Task Manager to see what's taking up your processor's time.

I did that and the only thing it might be is Windows Explorer. I don;t think
its the processor that's the problem, something is accessing the hard drive
and keeping it constantly busy.
