Norton Systems Works Causing Slowdown?

I've been using Norton System Works on my daughter's laptop without any
problems for over 6 months. Recently I used the Optimize utility to defrag
the hard drive. After using the utility the computer would not boot. After
trying to boot again it booted, but the computer runs noticeably slower.
Applications take twice as long to launch, the computer does not respond to
inputs quickly etc. Its as if the CPU is working of other tasks...or the
hard drive has greatly slowed down. However, CPU utilizations seems normal
and there are no unknown processes running. Any clues as to what the
utility might have done and how I can get back to the way things were? XP
restore is turned off as I am also using Norton GoBack. Unfortunately
GoBack did not have any restore points recorded. Help!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but here goes...

Norton System Works is pure crap. It has the ability to completely screw up
a perfectly fine system. GoBack, in my opinion, is one of the worst products
ever made.

To be fair, Norton Ghost is perhaps the best piece of software I've ever
paid money for. Their corporate AV is not too bad, either. Everything else
is garbage. Steer clear.

Another Norton victim.

Not much we can do at this point except to help you "de-Norton" your
system once you decide on what programs to replace the essential parts
of Norton with.

Check the CPU usage by process in Windows task manager. In the
Processes tab click twice on the CPU column header to sort the list
into descending order based on CPU usage. That might show you
something.
