System Automatically shutting down

-- Trying to resolved two issues, now this one: My system, WinXP SP-2,
simply decides to 'shut down'. No warning, no errors, etc. Then, if I
'push' the on switch on the front of the unit, nothing happens. But...the
wierd thing...I can unplug the unit, re-plug it back in, and then push the on
button, and things work fine, reboots, etc. Windows loads...no errors. But,
later on, same thing. New computer. I have run diag. and do not believe it
is is Power Supply, and do not believe it is over-heating...(can use the
computer for hours with no problem...)...so, other than these two (which it
may be, am still checking) do anyone have a suggestion??? Why does the on
switch not work, then unplug unit, and the on switch then works? Need to
determind this peculiar thing prior to searching for solutions...this is so
wierd!!! So, question, does anyone have a clue why you cannot turn on a unit
until you unplug it, then you can turn on the unit with no problem.....

Hi ,

Run a complete Anti-Virus Scan of your operating system partition. Replace any infected files.

One possible cause of the sudden shutdown is bad, failing, defective,
incompatible, mismatched etc. memory. This can also cauuse restart issues.

You mention that you've run fiagnostics, but not what diagnostics. Try
memtest, and if it finds any problems, consider replacing memory.

I had this recently with a Dell computer. Turns out, they had a huge batch
of bad motherboards. I think it was an Optiplex GX270 that would restart
itself or shut itself down, and then wouldn't power back on.

My money is on the power supply, or more than likely the motherboard. Email
me directly if you have more questions.

-- May be, that was my first idea, but, remember, when this happens, I just
cannot turn it on by power supply button on front, but I can immediately
unplug then replug it back to AC and it turns on immediately, no problem.
So, if was the Motherboard, or the PS, I believe this would not work
immediately....but still checking.

Instead of unplugging the computer, try turning off the Power Supply switch in the back of the computer and turn it back on. If it works, then you have a bad Power Supply or defective one. Having been thru this problem myself.

Your Power Supply unit, may be borderline for your computer. Replacing the Power Supply from a 400 Watt to 500 Watt Power Supply should fix the problem.

Ran the MemTest. Ran for a long time, with no errors. Of course, it
recommends that it run overnight, which I did not do. But, no imme.
errors....the checks I have made...SandraPro, Norton WinDoctor, etc., finds
no problems. But something is going on....

Will do that if and when next time. Usually once a day it will happen.
Will check it out with the power switch....(Not that this matters, but this
is a new computer, only a month old).....Ran fine up to recently.....

Hi bijobe,

I am talking about from my experiences involving my Brand new Computer. The Power Supply in the case I purchased failed within 60 days of use.

One early morning, I got out of bed and decided to turn on the computer. It did not turn on from the front switch. So I turned off the Power Supply and then flipped the switch back on. Then I hit the switch on front / top of the computer and this time it worked.

Then the Power Supply failed completely. I had to get a replacement under warranty from TigerDirect.com. I even sent back the motherboard for repair thinking maybe a short. Sent the motherboard back twice and both times came back with nothing wrong.

They even had be do the breadboard test of the motherboard, before installing the motherboard back into the case.

Breadboard Test: Only connect the CPU Fan to the motherboard, along with the Case On-Off switch. Then plug in the connectors from the Power Supply. Nothing else connected to the motherboard, including CPU and memory cards. Hit the Power Switch on the Case and the CPU Fan should run continously. It did not the first time. So they had be try a diferent Power Supply and it worked fine.

BUT, when you are talking about the System Automatically shutting down, the computer goes off, like the Power Cord is unplugged from the Outlet? Or does it give you warning that Windows is shutting down?

You ran Diagnostics, but have you ran a complete Full-Blown Anti-Virus Scan, where it isn't running in the background, but upfront, with the Scan Now command?

No, I found out if I disable all start-up items in the SysConfUtil, then the
power scheme works. But, I cannot find out the villan that is giving me the
problem.....
