System Advanced Performance Settings Issues

I tried to help my son (at college) who was trying to improve the video
refresh rate performance of an on-line game (Everquest II). We decided to
make changes to Windows Performance by going to the
System/Advanced/Performance settings in Control Panel. We reset the Visual
Effects to "Adjsut for Best Performance", changed the Memory Usage to "System
Cache" and Increased Virtual Memory to minimum "2000". I had him acespt the
changes and restart the system. When he tried to run Everquest all sorts of
issues developed with the screen display and the program would not run
properly. When we tried to reset the System Performance settings back to
their original settings, accepting them and then restarting the system, we
found that Windows would not reset the settings and we started having all
sorts of error messages. He also only had limited connects the internet and
many web sites would not function properly.

Help! How do I get Windows XP Home to rest the System Performance settings
back to their original settings?? My son is at college freaking out with only
limited computer capabilities.

The question really is how do I get Windows XP Home to revert back to the
default Advanced Performance Settings? It will not apply our changes even
after we restart the system. The settings stay at the levels that we
originally changed them to and we can't get the system to go back to the
original settings.
