Computer was working fine and I believe someone in the household click on
something they shouldn't had and now I am unable to view the control panel or
task manager. It give message stating "Operation cancelled due to
restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact system administrator.
Can someone please let me know how this can be fixed. I tried a restore, and
it won't let me change that either. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Someone has set a local group policy. If you type 'gpedit.msc' in the run
box, you should see the local policy editor. Under 'User Configuration' you
will see 'Administrative Templates,' and beneath that, you will 'Control
Panel." Check the policy that reads, "Prohibit access to the control panel."

My 'Control Panel' icon has gone from my 'Start Menu' which is worrying !
My PC is running generally well on XP Home edition but if I click on 'Start
Menu', 'Set Program Access and Default' icon I get message advising that it
is restricted and contact Administrator. I get same message if I try to enter
Security Centre or Add/Remove programs from 'All Programs'.

A similar problem did previously occur with 'Task Manager' but after help
from Bullguard and running different Spyware programs access to Task Manager
returned and it works every time now.

If I put gpedit.msc in 'Run' I get message that it cannot be found and
advising me to use Windows Search. When I do this , with hidden files
enabled, no files are listed ? However if I put ' regedit ' in Run I can gain
access to Registry edit but unable to find 'local policy editor' 'User
configuration ' etc. as Pat & Vinson advised to solve similar problem.

Help much appreciated

Thanks Pat I have been able to follow you advice and into HKey Local Machine,
software, microsoft , windows, current version, polices, explorer

This gave me No Control Panel, REG_DWord , 0x00000001(1)

If I right click on No Control Panel I am given two choices either 'Modify'
or 'Modify binary date'

Now Pat I 'm not technical and have no previous experience of going into
Registry Edit etc. but do know that one needs to be extremly careful unless
you know what you are doing ? So I'm a bit nervous about making changes that
could go wrong and I couldn't put right. However I ve been grappling with
this No Control Panel access for over two weeks now and need to resolve.

Can you any give me a bit of assurance before I modify binary date and
change the '1' to a '0' and what about the (1) bit on the end does that have
to be changed to '0' as well ?

Thanks for help so far.
