What version of XP are you using? If you are using XP Pro you could use
gpedit.msc to open local Group Policy and go to user
configuration/administrative templates/Windows components/Windows Explorer
and make sure that the setting for prevent access to these drives is set to
disabled which may fix the problem but it still does not explain how it
happened in the first place which could be malware related if that setting
was undefined. It would be a good idea to check your computer for malware by
scanning for it using the latest virus definitions for the program you use.
Removing malware however does not usually undo restrictions that the malware
placed on your system. --- Steve

Thx, but I'm using XP Home...
If I create a new user account I can access those drives, but not on my
current one.
Can't get it figured out. :p

What kind of drives are D and E? Are they partitions of the hard drive or USB
drives, cdrom,DVD, etc?? Also the new user account that can access the drives is
that account also an administrator or not? Can they be accessed when booted into
Safe Mode? Do you have any special software installed such as the Shared
Computer Toolkit or anything else that can be configured to restrict users other
then via the native operating system? --- Steve

i am having the same problem and have tried every fix:

running Windows XP Home - i have downloaded (3) sypware support programs-
ran them and got rid of several errors

the problem began when i loaded Norton systemsworks and Personal firewall
went to their site and was able to resolve the Access to c denied error.

I am still stuck in the same place. i can set up another admin account and
access my c - but the current administrator account will no allow me to
access drive c (only hard drive). any help other solutions - i used the two
links provided by you in previous post did not correct the problem.
