Syntax colored text editor

Hi,

Is there anything like a freeware, tabbed, syntax-colored text editor
(preferably for HTML and programmable for other formats would be nice),
similar to EditPad Lite?

TIA

One I've come across recently is PSPad www.pspad.com which I tried as
Crimson Editor, while excellent, is a bit *too* fully featured for me.

I really only *need* colour coded html.

I don't suppose any one knows of something a little *less* comprehensive?

I dunno if this has any less features....the opposite probably. But it
starts off with HTML and there's plugins for any language you can imagine,
just about. But it's tabbed and coloured:

My personal favorite is SciTE:
<http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html>

Another one that looks very nice is Syn Text Editor:
<http://syn.sourceforge.net/>

Both of them are open source plus, if required, can be extended using
scripting languages (Filerx for SciTE and WSH for Syn).

ConTEXT v0.97.2a [1.03MB]

While ConTEXT is still a good editor there have been reports of a
critical bug in its forum ('random file gets deleted' IIRC) so IMHO
it would be wise to point to the download page *and* ConTEXT's web-
based forum:
<http://www.cdnet.com.hr/yabbse/index.php?board=2>

Information and possible solutions for that bug are discussed in one
of the first threads.

In spite of the bug, which only seems to be in earlier versions, I just
really liked ConText (http://www.fixedsys.com/context/) version 0.97.2a.
It was exactly what I was looking for. I'll just be careful with it for
awhile and make sure that the bug has really been squished.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I like Araneae for HTML. Very simple.

Thanks to jpt and half cut for the suggestions.

(It would take me about a week to work out how to do 1/2 on the computer
which is why all the in your face features of the text editors mentioned
depress me. I'm too thick for linux and can't talk klingon.)

All I need is a text editor that can do a bit of html without opening up
dreamweaver and having backups and notes and things created thatI don't
want.

So I'll give them a try.

For all the h****y-a****d neanderthals who say use Notepad I can't sort
out me tables and stuff without the colour coding - I'm a wuss ;-)

I heartily second SciTE. I use this pre-built Win version.
http://gisdeveloper.tripod.com/scite.html
Some info from that page...

Scintilla Text Editor (SciTE) is a very nice small-footprint source
code editor based on the Scintilla text editor widget. SciTE and
Scintilla itself are made by Neil Hodgson
SciTE for Win32 as published by Neil Hodgson at www.scintilla.org.
The current version of the installer is based directly on Neil's build
of SciTE, as published on September 25 in his release candidate of
SciTE 1.55

I've tried Aranaea and like it a lot, but it's donationware. Pity, as it
seems just right....

From the website:

you email me and let me know what you think of it."

In any case, I think that most people in this group (even JC's devoted
followers) regard donationware as acceptable in this newsgroup.

*Voluntary donations* - otherwise the only obligation seems to be to let
the author know how you find his program.

If it seems 'just right' then why not just use it.

All right, perhaps they've all made me twitchy!
