Synctoy ROCKS!

Yeah, I'm liking it too so far - but it'd be great to be able to schedule
regular tasks, a daily sync'ing of certain drives etc. Any plans for that?

Mike-

Thanks for what looks like it will be a cool tool!

One thing I've noticed in playing with Synctoy is that several times it has
sync'd things up just fine, but the "Results: Folder Name" window stays
active, with the Stop button enabled and Close disabled. For example, I just
deleted a file in one of the folders, and the window shows the status bar all
the way to the right, but it's just sitting there.

If I click Stop and/or close the window, then sync again, it indicates
everything was completed.

Is this a known issue?

I was just waiting for this kind of tool, we have plenty of digital photos
and managing them is not easy.

I have written a small script (actually a HTA), that copies pictures from
the memory card to the PC, but this doesn't solve the problem of syncing the
pictures with external drives or network drives, so here is where SyncTool
comes into the picture.

ALtrough I have not tested SyncTool so far, after reading the white paper I
have some ideas to improove it even further:

- For copying CF cards and extended "Contribute" mode could be used, which
would immediately move the files (so you don't have to format the CF card)
and if in the right directory there is a file with the same name, it gives a
new unique name for the file (e.g. if DSCN0001.jpg already exist, then it
will be copied as DSCN0001_1.jpg). This mode could be named "Move"
- My script copies the pictures in subfolders based on the date of the
files, adding some logic to SyncToy create and copy files based on different
attributes (date, EXIF attributes, Document properties) could be very usefull.
-It would be nice to be able to run external programms/scripts after
finishing syncing as for examle I have a program that rotates the pictures
based on EXIF attributes, which should run after compleeting a copy.

I have the same or similar problem. I wanted to use "echo" to synchronize a
folder, but the program does not recognize deleted or renamed files. Neither
in preview nor when I run it. In the latter case the run window stays open as
described above.

To test it I renamed a single file. In the right folder neither the old file
was deleted nor a file with the new name appeared. Apart from that handling
new files seems to work.

The left folder is a local one, the right a folder in the local network.

Cheers,

Hi Laco -

Thanks for the feedback. I am gathering all of this information and sending
it to the dev team who is working on the SyncToy.

I'd like to suggest a feature enhancement. It'd be better if we can
filter out some files or folders by its name (wildcard accpetable).

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I am gathering all of this information and

Two things that that prevent me from rating this one "Kick Ass (tm)":

a) Exceptions are thrown because of exceedingly long path/filenames.
Problem is, I have no idea which file(s) were responsible for causing this.
The program needs to display those entries.

b) As I was working my way through deselecting folders because of long
paths, I noticed that deselecting a parent folder does NOT remove the
checkmark from any child folder--thus I had to manually go through hundreds
of child entries to remove their checkmarks.

Also, and this is part of (b) above, at one point I had deselected
*everything*, yet the program still threw exceptions because of long paths.
If nothing's selected, then obviously this shouldn't happen...

Finally...("two things", he said) :) Once one of those exceptions is
encountered, the program doesn't even try to skip the entry; it just aborts
everything. I'd rather have it ignore the entry, but then at the end
display a list of items that couldn't be processed so I can decide what to
do about them...

I fully subscribe to what you say, I have also noticed the same
behavior. Other than that, SyncToy is a really usefull tool easy to
use, slender, fast (faster than the third party programs I have used so
far).
