Howdy: Not sure if I can explain what I need. All the freeware that I
download off the net is sorted and stored in a folder on a partition
of my hard drive. I also have the same folder on another hard drive
that is portable (USB). Is there a program that will allow me to copy
the newer files/programs that I have archived on my internal hard
drive to the portable drive and update it and maybe even delete the
files that were deleted/updated on the internal drive?

The problem is when I archive new programs I don't get around to
updating the portable hard drive at the same time. So when I do, I
forget which files and their location that I have changed/updated.

I guess I need something to compare the two directorys and make
changes to the mobile unit. Thanks.

I like to use a program called FileSync written by Scott Wright to keep my
downloads backed up on external drives.

It does not meet all of your qualifications as it makes the directories
identical, copying what ever is newer over to the other directory you
specify, and in either direction. If you delete a directory from one of the
drives the program will not delete it on the other drive. Instead, the next
time the directories are synchronized the deleted folder will be re-copied
from the one that it still exists on to the second directory, in either
direction. So if you really want something deleted you have to do it on
both directories. As I have two external drives and keep a copy of my
downloads on them I periodically delete the folder on one of them and let
the next sync cycle rebuild things on that backup and then swap drives for
the next cycle.

If interested here is one place where you can get the freeware file or you
can do a Google search with "FileSync Scott Wright" and download it from a
place of your own choosing.

XXcopy will do what you want. Use the /CLONE switch and it will
update/delete as needed.

One more for your collection is `Syncback`.

I'm using Syncback for the same purpose.
A great program. Easy and self-explaining.

SyncBack is a good choice. If you are doing this for backup purposes
only and wish to add compression to the backup, you might want to try
Back2zip or TaskZIP. To compare two synchronized folders you can use
the freeware Comparator. Here's a description of these freeware backup
tools:

How about Microsoft Sync Toy (if you're using XP)
