sync with handheld

I have just bought a Palm handheld, and it has a feature where you can sync
it with your desktop using infrared. My problem is that as soon as I put the
handheld near the desktop, a wireless software for transferring files comes
up on the desktop, and I cannot sync the handheld because I get a message
that the port is already in use. I cannot find any way to disable this
transfer software, as it comes up automatically. It's great for transferring
files, but it prevents me from using the infrared sync feature of using my
handheld. Is there any way I can disable this feature, or at least bring it
under my control?

I tried that. As soon as the desktop senses the handheld nearby, the
transfer software starts. I got it to work once, but I don't remember how I
did it.
