Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting 2 computers, with
bluetooth, to sync their Outlook files, appointments etc? If so, how,
please?

I cannot find one computer from one direction but can back the other way.
Damned HP laptop, 24 hours old, BT doesn't seem to come set up in it and
when I attempt to set it up, it errors every time. Needless to say, this has
made me wonder if it is at all possible and if not, what other options there
may be.

It maybe possible but it is not the method I would even consider, setting up
a network of the two computers, would be more reliable and faster.
It is nothing to do with the computer, Hp or otherwise.

Yeah it IS actually. The built in BT on this new HP laptop wasn't fully
installed when the setup procedure finished and took a hell of a lot of time
to figure out and get working. Once I did, it didn't work anyway. You cannot
sync 2 computers' outlook data (all of it, calendar and all) without
software of some kind to intervene. I don't want to spend a lot of money on
a business server I wont use but I do need to sync the laptop to the
desktop. Bluetooth isn't possible though. Networking may be another way.

Apologies in advance, if I'm stating the obvious, but ...

it sounds like you want to sync up 2 computers, right? You cannot use the
Vista Sync Centre to synchronise comuters. It only works for syncronising
one computer with compatible mobile devices like smart phones, PDAs etc.

Personally I consider this to be an immensely brain-dead manoeuvre on
Microsoft's part; obviously people will want to sync laptop to desktop, etc
(I know I do) it should have been a core design scenario. But I'll accept it
was a structural failing in Microsoft's orgnaisation, not a mere oversight
by any one individual.

Anyway ... to synchronise 2 computers, the recommended solution for Vista
appears to be SyncToy 1.4:

It's a free download. It works by using SMB connections to remote machines
(ie like a NET USE" or map a drive in Explorer). Whether you can make an SMB
connection using Bluetooth, I dunno ... but you can certainly make a
connection using Wi-Fi (802.11)

Other folks may have better ideas. Hope it helps anyway.

Yep, this I knew. I wanted to find a way to sync them anyway, as you can do
if you use a Microsoft server package. Then, I could have all email and
calendar or whatever data I wanted that Outlook holds sync to the server and
to any other machine I want it to sync to. There IS a way to sync to web
pages such as at Microsoft but I am not in the least happy with doing that.

Nothing braindead about it, really. They make and sell business server
solutions for just this task. If they made it easy, they couldnt sell that
software. Makes a whole lot of sense to me. It just doesnt help me at all.
There ARE a lot of programs, I have found on a Google search since asking
this question, that will do the sync without having to resort to a server
program but they are programs that cost a fair bit, too. I am not going to
pay for that, awaiting MS Home Server prog to come out. If it works out, it
is the way to go.

Thanks for the info. SyncToy is like Briefcase really (BTW, anyone who
suggested this - I finally found it. I did a search for it and found nothing
and when creating a new folder, there it was on the context menu!). SyncToy
can be a useful thing for a lot of applications but as it is basically the
same as Briefcase, that makes it not the answer for me. Neither of those
things actually sync Outlook data so back to waiting for MS Home Server I
guess. The only difference between SyncToy and Briefcase, so far as I can
see, is that with SyncToy you can name a folder of your choice as one of the
pairs and you don't appear to be able to do that with Briefcase.

I also want to sync, between Google Calendar and Contacts at home (on Vista)
and Outlook (on Windows 2000) at work. Of course, Google is (heavy)
competition for MS, but doesn't MS keep telling us they provide what users
want?

I use Google at home because it is free, requires basically no installation,
is accessible from anywhere over the web, frees me from back-up hassles,
requires little local hardware, and is easy to use - I do not require loads
of features for home use - I do for business use.
