Does anyone know how to create and save a symbol in word 2007?

I am writing a book for someone and he wants certain symbols that he has
made to be in book itself and I can figure out for the life of me on how to
do it?

There is a way to add a character to a font in Windows, but unless you
distribute the font, no one else will be able to use it.
