Symbols & shapes have replaced my fonts

Has onyone encountered the problem of symbols and shapes replacing the fonts
on your desktop icons and other areas on your system . I am able to do this
but my type is blurry and distorted. I can not run system restore . It will
go through the motions but says it is incomplete and will not restore. I have
run spyware , antivirus and adware. Found a few things and deleted them .
But the problem is still on my system . Help please.

It means that a symbol font has been used instead of a character font.

Right click on the desktop
Choose "Appearance"

Click on the pulldown for "item"
find "icon" change the font identified to Tahoma, Verdana or other easily readable
character font. Go through the list of "items" and check all other fonts as well.
