Home SP2 font display as symbols not english after boot

Booted my system after running PC MightyMax came back with two problems:
1 - as soon as windows starts loading all lettering displays in a symbol
font, Graphic displays seem ok. examp. select user - Buttons display
correct but user comes out in symbols or windings. So, can't tell what the
system is trying to say in pop-up's, drop-down, or just typing.
2 - windows fails to start returning from a boot. After signing in with
userID and pass, XP trys to start but fails with a alert 'Windows Product
Activation' window. Can't read the content of the window 'cause of prob 1
above.

I am clueless where to go next -- HP sent me proceedure for doing a restore.
Seems way to drastic to wipe all data. Hope someone can tell me where to find
and fix the font problem, and how to get XP to know it is valid copy.

Any ideas, suggestions, to help are really needed.

First thing is to try booting to last known configuration, do this by
taping the F8 key after you turn the machine on and before windows
begins to load.
If this doesn't fix the font problem try booting into safe mode [F8
key again]and doing a restore: start |all programs |accessories |system
tools |system restore.
