The exclamation point refers to the importance the message was sent with,
the paperclip is to show attachments to messages, if there are any, and the
flag is for messages you decide to watch. This is all in the help file...

I have been trying to find a list of these symbols and I cannot find
them all together. I eventually found the paperclip but not the
others.
Windows help system is HOPELESS!! - go to help from windows mail
program and enter a search term and you get links to ANYTHING in
windows - not just the mail program!! How useless is that!!??!!??
Sigh... My bad, this information USED to exist in Outlook Express' help
file under the title "Message list icons". Sadly, it appears to have been
removed from both Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail's help files.
