Symbols Don't Appear in Table of Contents

I'm using Word 2003 and have a number of figure captions with symbols in
them. When I generate the table of contents, the symbols appear as a box.
Any ideas what could be causing this and the solution? Thanks.

How did you assign the font to the symbol characters? See if using a
Character Style rather than simply changing the font will cause it to
stick when the ToC styles get slapped on top.
