I have installed Norton system works 2005 . Roxio GoBack came as part of
the package but i did not install it as i have heard it causes problems
with XP. I have had no success with XPs system restore which never
works so i would like to install GoBack as it was an exzcellent tool
when used with 98SE. Anyone got experience with this ?

Hello, Use GoBack v3.0DeluxEdition updated to v3.2, have had no problems on
this unit WindowsXPHomeSP2 with all security updates. Installed 20 months ago.
1. Read the information about GoBack before installing.
2. Find out why "System Restore" does not work.
You can disable "system restore"after installing GoBack, but you need to
find out why it is not functioning.
take care.

My experinece with GoBack is when it works it works great. When it goes
wrong it goes very wrong. I have had two customers who experienced problems
with GoBack such that there was no alternative but to format and start
again. Make sure you have another backup method as well as GoBack. GoBack is
not a substitute for a backup.

I second what someone else said about finding out why
it doesn't work before trying something else.

However, I'm not sure why you would need to run System
Restore frequently. I've had XP for years and never had to
run a System Restore. Just wondering.

For what it is worth, here is my 2 cents worth. My experience with GoBack
lead me to believe it is NOT much if any better than Restore Points in XP,
which is poor under the best of circumstances. I finally started using
Ghost 2003 <2005 or v9 sucked>. I find Ghost easy to use and have not had
any problems using it or had it to fail in any way.

I used go back 3.0 and it worked very well but slowed my old computer
down. Also on 98SE.

I, like you, had problems with system restore failing, so I installed
goback 4.0 from the NSW disk. it worked very well. It logs EVERY
change including data files and can have a performance impact on a
slow processor.

However, I recently replaced my hard drive and then step by step
reinstalled after market software to try to determine what had blown
away my standby option. I am pretty certain that when live update
automatically upgraded from v4.0 to v4.02, that's the origin of my
standby problems. So I've not installed it on this new drive.

I still have problems with system restore, as during the rebuild
process I had a few occasions to try to restore to an earlier point
and it failed every time ("system cannot be restored...".). I had
thought that was due to my failing hard drive but who knows?

I have ntbackup, (not installed in my original XP installation, but
downloaded from a link on this page:
http://www.winxptutor.com/ntbackup.htm

It works very well as a backup and restore. The backup is not
constant, although you can schedule a backup. To back up to an
external hard drive, it must be formatted for the NTFS. You run
ntbackup from the run dialog box.

I have a similar problem. I attempted to install SystemWorks 2006, everything
was fine untill GoBack was being installed (part of the SystemWorks Suite),
it ended up blue screening. Now I have some major problems, most of my
programs will not launch, the only program that IO have had sucess in
launching is my mozilla firefox browser. I cannot get into my control panels,
system restore, system info, dr.watson, etc. I know this is not a hardware
problem everything was fine before and when I do get a browser running, it
works like it should. The only was I am able to get system restore to work is
through the start/run command and when I do it hangs. I reinserted the norton
disk and did a uninstall, but no changes. I am thinking that Norton added
something to the MBR?

Here is a copy of my hijack this log, not sure if it will help or not:
