Symantec "free" virus detection and security scan

....is BS.
Their virus detection scan !demands! IE5 or "better"(??), ActiveX,
and (get this) scripting!
Any one of these is just *asking* for troubles in River City without
the music man.
Their security scan sort-of works, but complains and tries to sell
you a personal firewall (gee, i wonder what brand they have in mind?).

Avoid Symantec / Norton !!

A number of on line scanners require using IE with active X controls,
for example:

"The On-line Scanner service offered by Kaspersky Lab uses Microsoft
ActiveX technology. Microsoft ActiveX Technology and the Kaspersky
On-line Scanner work only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher."

Tough, huh?

Not Trend Micro !

They now have a Sun Java compliant online AV scanner !

Only problem there, is you have to have the JavaVM installed. Unfortunately
all of those technologies are of course exploitable.

Of course. On line scanning is not meant to be a permanent replacement
for locally installed utilities; except for those losers who are too
"poor" to afford software, but somehow can wrangle a computer and an
internet connection.

Dear Santa: Please give me my own welfare state for Christmas.

GRC checks ports for problems and does not demand any particular
browser, does not need ActiveX or any other BS.

It's hardly an AV scanner though, which is what everybody else is
talking about. :)

And is in no way comparable to anything in this discussion which is about online AV
scanners, specifically Symantec's. It is not about FireWall port probing. Hell, I can
place a phone call to a buddy and have him do the same.

a question: Are all the single words as "> ActiveX" (line 11), ">
without" (line 14) etc. from you (as the ">" or the preposter? Seems
that your NewsClient produces faulty linefeeds/character returns and
therefore much confusion within the quoting level? Reading who wrote
what this way is very confusing. Perhaps please check these examples and
please have a look at the configuration of your newsclient. Thanks.

Another question: Are you a Virgo? Only that sign is as nitpicky as you
are. Stop worrying about faulty newsreaders and OT posts and concentrate on
what this news grour is meant for......ANTIVIRUS PROBLEMS/QUESTIONS!! OK??

Heather
nitpickers will be killed.

Yes, I replied, and my news client enforces line breaks at odd places
(looks fime to me while composing). It didn't used to do that until
sombody whined about my line length and I agreed to change the settings.
I'll change them back now until somebody whines again.

Yes, it looks like the client places the ">" character in the text
before enforcing line breaks instead of the other way around.
Reading who wrote

I will look into the matter.

Now, your trouble, Peter, is you don't seem to understand government. Don't
you know you should be lobbying your lawmakers about these issues?
Compulsion is the *only* way this will be corrected! Have you bothered
lobbying the EU at all???
