Vista Home Premium.
I have never used Norton or Symantec. I have deleted every Symantec and
Norton file I could find on my PC. Now when I start Media Center I get this
annoying message "The Sym Addln program has stopped responding and you will
be returned to Media Center". I click on the OK button and Media Center
works fine.

How can I get rid of this annoyance?

Backup registry before you delete stuff.

Search in the registry for it, then delete the key.

Thanks Carl,
I failed to mention that I also deleted everything I could find in the
registry.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

There's a giant contradiction in those last two sentences. If you've
never used anything Norton or Symantec, there would be nothing Norton
or Symantec to delete.

Download and run the appropriate Norton removal tool;

More than likely it came with his computer and he
hasn't used it or never used it in the past on other
computers.

Exactly right!

You need to go to their websites and get their cleaners.
I had the same problem a year ago and finally got their tech support to tell
me that they do have a cleaner to rid the PC of all traces.
I downloaded it, ran it and all was fixed.

Bob,

I have searched all over the web for references to this item and could
find nothing. I also searched for it on Norton's support website with no
results. This leads me to believe it has nothing to do with Norton/Symantec.

I do know that SYM can be related to Symmetric Power, such as in
mathematics and/or linear algebra, and it can be used as a prefix to mean
with or together. Of course, it is also used as an abbreviation for Symbol.

Which edition of Vista are you using? Is it the version marketed in
America, Europe, Asia or some other region? I only ask this because who
knows what is placed in editions other than the American edition.

In these discussion groups it is sometimes used in place of Shut Your
Mouth or Speak Your Mind. I can't really give you any advice because I don't
know the answer and can't find the answer.

Have a nice day.

C.B.

Thanks for your efforts C.B. I'm in the U.S.

I'm assuming Sym Addln is related to Symantec because the popup began to
appear after I deleted all references to Symantec on my PC.

I did another search of my registry (thanks Carl) and there are many more
Symantec keys that I missed the first time. Hopefully the popup will no
longer appear after I delete the keys.

Let's hope so.
Norton is very hard to get rid of.

Nobody should ever install a Norton product.

You did see this link provided by Michael.

Download and run the appropriate Norton removal tool;

Carl,
As I said earlier I never installed or used Norton. The damn program came
with the PC.
I did see the link but I don't think there's anything left to uninstall.
Plus I'm not sure I want another ominous Symantec product to have access to
my PC or Symantec to have my email address. It seems I need to sign up for
a Norton account before I can use the uninstaller. What I'm referring to is
this:

"Note If the product is currently not installed on your computer, check the
Product Key at the back of the CD sleeve, or in the confirmation email that
you received from Symantec for your download purchase. Once you write down
the Product Key, go to STEP 3.

1 Open your Norton product.
2 On the left side of the main product window, under Quick Links, click
Norton Account.
3 Click Next.
4 Type in your email address and password for your Norton Account, then
click Next.
Note If you do not have a Norton Account set up already, click Create a
Norton Account, complete the form, then click Next.

5 Click Next to continue to your Norton Account.
6 Sign into your Norton Account using your email address and password.
7 Click the Norton product that you want to update.
8 Write down the Product Key.
9 Sign out of your Norton Account, then continue with STEP 3"

I don't have and never did have "CD sleeve, or in the confirmation email
that you received from Symantec for your download purchase"

Also I found this thread where even using the uninstall program was
unsuccessful:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=739436

And then there's this:
"Any information sent to Symantec, with the exception of credit card
numbers, will be deemed NOT CONFIDENTIAL. You grant Symantec an
unrestricted, irrevocable license to display, use, modify, perform,
reproduce, transmit, and distribute any information you send Symantec, for
any and all commercial and non-commercial purposes."

I think for now I'm just going to concentrate on deleting the Symantec
entries in the registry.

Please let me know if you think I'm wrong about this.
Thanks,
Bob

Mission Accomplished!

Several times during the process of deleting the registry keys I received a
message from WinPatrol that a Symantec program was trying to install itself.
Thanks to WinPatrol I was quickly able to abort the installation. I also
noticed that a System Restore point named something like "Norton uninstall"
was automatically created.

Symantec is malicious software and I would advise everyone to stay away from
it.
