Sygate Personal Firewall Free 5.5.2615
Author: Sygate Technologies, Inc.
Program Type: Freeware

File Description:

Sygate Personal Firewall is more than an advanced, user-friendly personal
firewall, it's a bi-directional intrusion defense system. It ensures your
personal computer is completely protected from malicious hackers and other
intruders while preventing unauthorized access from your computer to a
network. In essence, it makes your protected machines invisible to the
outside world. That makes it a must-have security measure for any PC that
connects to a private network or the public Internet. Once you've been
compromised, every other network you connect to is at risk; including your
home, business and online bank accounts. No matter where you use your
computer, whether remote or behind a corporate firewall, whether dial-up
or an always-on broadband Internet connection, it gives you complete
confidence that your precious business, personal, financial and other data
is safe and secure. If that isn't enough, it includes advanced active-scan
vulnerability assessment to pinpoint your weaknesses and fine-tune your
security policy.

Changes in Current Version:
Anti-Application Hijacking Protection
—The Personal Firewall now protects
against even more attacks, including such exploits such as "TooLeaky" and
others Enhanced performance
—The Personal Firewall is now faster and
takes fewer system resources Log Dampener Feature
—The Personal Firewall
adds new logging flexibility and performance enhancement features,
including the option to selectively enable or disable the security logs,
system logs, traffic logs, and full packet logs Support for Windows Server
2003
—The Personal Firewall is now supported on Windows Server 2003 for
Small to Medium Businesses. For server deployments greater than 500 seats
and that need centralized management, Sygate Secure Enterprise is required
Improved Microsoft System Installer Support
—The Personal Firewall is now
packaged by default as a Microsoft System Installer (MSI) package to
simplify deployment with Microsoft SMS and other software distribution
tools

Any user opinions on this one please?

Regards,

I have the last release (I do not know the version number, I am at work
now...) but I preferred this over ZOne Alarm because it was more
configurable. I know that many people in this forum are not big fans of
it, but for what I do, it suffices.

This is a great app. I've used SPF about 3 1/2 yrs now. It can also be
programmed to send you an email alert in the event of attack, which it
has been very reliable notifying me.

Any user opinions on this one please?

Loopback problem still not fixed. Users of proxomitron, webwasher, etc
might want to take note of this.

That would be me, ta.

Having read some posts about older versions of ZoneAlarm I decided to
give the benefit of the doubt to the advice received and installed the
latest version on both this machine and my laptop.
Oh dear - my previously stable OS seems to fall over itself with
discouraging regularity.

I could go back to the earlier version ( 2.6.xx ), but that wouldn't
address the security concerns - so perhaps it's time to find an
alternative.
Tried Outpost - and liked it too, save for the way it slowed my system
down when browsing.

I guess that leaves Kerio?

Just about. Then there's Look n Stop Lite . Not sure about the "lite"
part.

What are the effects of this problem? I have been running SPF since
the free version was first introduced, along with Proxo, and I have
not noticed any obvious conflicts. Are there symptoms I should be
looking for?

Any app can tunnel out and connect outwards if you are using a local
proxy without permission.

For some people it's not a problem.

Found this on the Sygate web site
(http://www.sygate.com/alerts/IP_Spoofing_Loopback_Address.htm)

"Sygate Security Alert
IP Spoofing Loopback Address

....In build 1148 and later the default policy has been modified to
block spoofed loopback adapter IP address.

....Sygate Personal Firewall customers who upgrade to build 1148 or
later are not impacted by this vulnerability."

Are you saying that this does not apply to the free version? Or are
you referring to a different problem? I'd like to understand this so I
can decide whether I should to switch to another firewall.

An example of the problem is this.I use naviscope as a proxy and have
given it browser permissions to connect to net etc.My antivirus AVG wants
to update and uses naviscope to update .Sygate free or pro will not ask
me to block/allow or prompt AVGs updater ,but just allows it, as its
using naviscope (my proxy) which ive already allowed. You may have noticed
already that certain apps update but sygate hasnt asked for permission to
accept them?.AVG is just one of them.

No different problem. Check the Sygate forums, people have being moaning
about it to be fixed for some time now.

That is what I am using right now. I was using Zone Alarm 2.something
for a long time because I heard that the 3.whatever versions were not as
good, and I decided it was time to change. Tried Outpost and it kept
crashing my Win98SE, P633, 256K memory machine. I was very disappointed
becuase it had lots of nice features. I recommend that one if it works
for your machine. Tried Kerio and for some reason it didn't want to
work. Tried Sygate and it works, so I'm sticking with it.

I tried it the other day. It looks good but has a pretty large memory
footprint. That's why I like to use Kerio - small but very
functional.
