Sygate- is the freeware ver still active?

Hi,

I've been using Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 build 2808 for a few years, and
know it was bought by *Symantec", and then discontinued around Jan/06 or
earlier.
Since there are no update data files, does this render Sygate PF useless? It
is a good program with excellent features.

If it isn't functional as an effective firewall, what would others suggest
as a replacement? I haven't tried Zonealarm for years.
I've read the recent postings on firewalls here, but nothing seems to be
strongly recommended.

Thanks,
Dugie

Hi Dugie,

The only "update file" I have ever seen from Sygate was the update from
the free to the Pro version... i.o.w. none! This system is running SPF,
the same version and build as you use(d).

As for recommendations: The only good firewall is an external, hardware,
firewall, but those are expensive! The next best thing is a separate
(older model most of the time) computer with a firewall running on it,
and an internal network, with a LAN-router to connect more than one
computer to the internet. If you happen to have DSL, your router may
provide some firewall services.

I'm running 5.5 build 2710. There have been no security updates to Sygate
since that build. Therefore, Sygate should be perfectly fine until another
exploit is discovered.

Thanks for the comments. It seems that staying with Sygate is safe, so I
will.
