Switching Vista off

When I close down Vista always defaults to sleep. Can I make it default to
shut down
In the sleep mode the hard drive appears to keep running - is this the case?

By default, when you click the Power button in the Start menu, it goes into Sleep mode. You can change the Power button action in the Start menu to Shut down the system or go into Hibernate mode. See:
