Switched monitors; no display on new monitor

Had a computer running WindowsME with an NEC Multisync 70
17" monitor, no monitor problems. Got new computer:
Compaq Presario S5000J; AMD Athlon 2600, no video card.
Windows XP pre-loaded on hard drive. Gave old computer to
brother, but kept monitor. The receipt of new computer
and giving away of old happened at my parents' home (far
away); I didn't lug my monitor there, so used an old 15"
Acer monitor there, probably set at 800x600, to look at my
new computer while there. Worked fine.

Returned home with new computer, hooked up NEC monitor
(resolution forgotten), turned on computer. The monitor
displays the POST screen info at great width--off the
screen on both sides, even after resizing display with the
monitors internal controls--though the vertical spacing
seems about right. I then get a Windows XP banner with a
rectangle beneath with green boxes moving horizontally--
this banner looks okay. Then there is a click and the
monitor display goes blank. The green light on the
monitor is still lit, so it's not hibernating, though it
behaves that way.

Perhaps Windows XP set itself to the original monitor's
specs and does not change this setting, resulting in some
incompatibility with the current monitor?

I cannot get to the operating system with the current
monitor; I can get to the Safe Mode boot option screen,
but when I then try to boot to Safe Mode, I just get a
screen full of "disk(0)rdisk(0)" text lines, then after a
few seconds the monitor clicks and goes blank.

Any ideas what's going on here and how I can fix it?
Thanks!
Randy

PS I don't have the Acer monitor available now, or any
other monitor than the NEC, but could borrow one.

I've had similar problems and have no definitive answer however older
monitors don't work well with newer boxes. I finally set my refresh rate to
60 instead of 85 hz and it works fine. might even try getting newer drivers
from the NEC site.

good luck
