Switched from Domain to Workgroup, can't login

I've been trying to get my work laptop (used a domain) and my home laptop to
share files and switched my work laptop to log into a workgroup. Now when I
rebooted the computer, I cannot login as it gives me the error:

"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are
correct, then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed
using the correct case."

You shouldn't have done that :)

Untill the machine is re-joined to the domain, your domain username and
password will not work.
You will only be able to log on to the machine with a local user account, if
you know one.

I'm afraid you will need to go to your work's IT people and have them
re-join it to the domain for you.

- Next time, leave it joined to the domain.

- Log in at home using your domain username / password.
( cached credentials means this will work. )

- Ensure the laptop picks up an IP address compatible with your home
network.
( If you have a router or use Internet COnnection Sharing software,
then it ought to pick up an address automatically. Otherwise,
set one manually.)

- Man a network drive from the laptop to a home PC, but select the
option to connect using a different username. Enter a username valid
on the home PC in the format: Home_PC_Name\Username ,
along with any password the account may have.

Now the laptop will have cached credentials for your home machine,
and should be able to browse it etc etc.

I have the same problem - but I don't have an IT department - it is just me
myself and I. Any suggestions as to how to get the computer to rejoin the
domain?

I just took an older workstation home to use it there and figured that the
domain search would cause delays - so I switched it to workgroup. There is a
lot of data there that I would rather not lose - so any suggestions are most
appreciated.

Thank you.

If none of the files are encrypted you can use a linux boot cdrom to change
the administrator password for the local machine. Once this is done you can
log on as the administrator and create a new local account. You will have to
take ownership of the data files before you will be able to access them. Do
not do this if any of the needed files are encrypted. The only way to get at
them if taht is the case is to re-join the computer to the domain.

Take ownership:

Boot CD to change password:
